Music podcasts are great and usually follow the single presenter format, showcasing some of the best music.. in their opinion. Indeed this is exactly the format of our very own Indie Launchpad Podcast. Whilst these shows are predominately about the music, the single presenter format can be occasionally dry, which is why the Binary StarCast is like a breath of fresh air.

Before going any further, let me first give the caveat that this is a podcast intended for a strictly adult audience. Most of this is because our hosts Ed, Hank and Carlos use the kind of language you would be more used to hearing at the docks. Not that I’m a prude, but you probably wouldn’t want your young children picking up new words for use in the playground. You also might want to steer clear of playing this on the works P.A. system. Anyway enough of this, as with all music shows, it’s all about the music baby.

Each show is around the 30 minute mark, managing to squeeze in 5 tracks from different artists. The podcast is so far up to episode 27, and I have to say in all that time, I’ve not like about 5% of the music, which is a pretty good. In fact I’ve been put on to numerous bands which I’ve later reviewed on our Indie Launchpad review site.

Conclusion : One of the few music podcasts that makes for essential listening, but not just for the music. The inane ramblings of our hosts, makes for some great entertainment.

Podcast : Whack My Bush

What do you get with two idiots ruling over the superpower nations of the US and UK? Did I hear you say reality? No, no, you get Whack My Bush, an irreverent look at the trials and tribulations of George Dubya and Tony Blair, with an ensemble cast of total f**kwits.

If you’ve ever seen the UK series, Spitting Image, the show that reduces celebrities, politicians and the royal family, to hapless, dimwit, latex puppets, you’ll find the humor here to be very funny. Yes you have to leave your reality check at the door, but this makes for some seriously funny and bizarre situations. The latest series of episodes have the Prime Ministers helicopter, being blown out of the sky, because instead of giving the correct password to land, our Prime Minister is more concerned in what is emanating from Mr Prescot’s rectal region. Not to mention having to rescue a nuclear missile from Fidel Castro. Remember I did say to leave the reality checks at the door.

In a similar vein to Ricky Gervais, Whack My Bush has followed the paid for subscription model, currently finding favor on the Internet. Unlike Ricky Gervais this is very funny, without being offensive, even though I do find the offesive stuff Ricky does, pretty funny, but then again I am one sick puppy. Admittedly there are more than a few swear words throughout each performance, but it’s all in context and I have to admit, most of the time it just goes in one ear and out the other without registering, but I suppose that’s because it’s easy to get desensitized to it now a days.

A subscription costs 6 which is about $10 and for that you get 24, 5 minute episodes for 3 months, usually a couple of episodes a week. That’s about 2 hours of entertainment for a couple of pints. There’s a trial feed which gives you a brief catch up on what is happening and a friendly message from Arnie, the Governator.

Conclusion : Seriously funny and one of the few podcasts actually worth paying for. Go on. Subscrive. Do iiiiit!

Podcast : Infected by Martin Sargent

For anyone familiar with the old Tech TV cable channel, you might have seen Martin Sargent in his own show Unscrewed, or as an occassional guest host on the Screensavers. However to say Martin’s podcast is a little more risque than his TV appearances, is an understatement. He opens every podcast with a sponsors message and recaps it throughout the podcast. If these sponsors aren’t really sponsors, I’m surprised he hasn’t been sued yet. If they really are sponsors, then I’ll never see a shoe store and a certain restaraunt in the same light again.

All this is humor at it’s lowest, but you can’t help finding yourself laughing, sometimes out loud. I’ve found myself laughing in public a few times while wearing headphones, which is a particular curious sensation when you realise you’re doing it. If I were to compare this to any other kind of humor, then the old Derek and Clive comedy act comes to mind. Lewd, crude and very, very funny.

Conclusion : If you are easily offended by vulgar and offensive language and humor, this will probably go down like a sack of spuds. Otherwise give it a try, so you too can become infected.

Podcast : The Ricky Gervais Show

Ricky Gervais will be a familiar face to many as the inept boss, David Brent in the English sitcom The Office. For anyone looking for a show in the similar vein of The Office, with clever, subtle humor, steer well clear of this podcast. That’s not to say it isn’t funny. It is, very funny. It’s just that this is comedy for a much more mature (open to debate) audience. I don’t know whether I’m surprised or not, that this podcast comes to us via the Guardian newspaper in the UK, but no matter, it’s a hit in my book, though it did take me a couple of shows to get into it.

The main protagonists for the podcast are Ricky Gervais and Steven Merchant, the writers of The Office and they’re friend Karl Pilkington, who seems to be the target of the majority of foul language, with his outlandish views. Where else can you find discussions of goats for Christmas presents; depraved primates with a penchant for privates; space, solitude and casual nudity in low Earth orbit and pregnant pensioners.

You can’t help but feel sorry for poor old Karl, but then I suppose that’s the general idea, cos anyone who appears to be that much of a plonker deserves a verbal slap or two.

Conclusion : There’s quite a few mature comedy podcasts out there and this is definitely one of the better ones. There’s a fine line with this kind of humor and Rick and gang manage to keep it on the right side.

When you first start listening to Dawn and Drew (DND), it’s like being a small kid again, finding Playboy for the first time and skulking around, making sure no one else knows you have it. All the while you’re walking around with a big (I have a secret) smile on your face.

DND are a husband and wife team , who live on a retired dairy somewhere in Wisconsin. Podcasting since September 2004, they produce 3-4 shows a week, covering anything they damn well want. Now when I say anything, you have to believe me, I mean anything. I won’t even mention any of the subjects here, but suffice to say they would surely make your poor old Grannies (sorry Grannies everywhere, for constantly using you as a benchmark) toes curl.

At first the podcasts are funny, sometimes ever side splittingly (yes I just said that), but it’s just not enough. I admit I haven’t listened to any of their podcasts in about 3 months now, so for the sake of completeness, I shall resubscribe and see if anything has changed.

(A shimmering haze prevails and time passes and I listen to the latest 2 podcasts)

Ok so maybe with a healthy pause in between listening for a while, they’re again up to their usual tricks and funny, but not quite as funny as the first time you begin to listen to them.

Conclusion : If you want to listen to some healthy smut and don’t mind being offended then I can wholeheartedly recommend the Dawn and Drew show. If you want nothing to do with any kind of probe and like your audible entertainment wholesome, then maybe you need to pick another podcast to listen to.

Podcast : Daily Source Code

Posted by admin on 26th October 2005

  • Website : Daily Source Code

Mmmm, now where do we start. How about, Adam Curry, long haired, porn loving, former MTV VJ, with Senseo induced burps and indie music. Yeah that’s a good intro, but only just skims the surface.

Adam, is often referred to as the “Podfather”, due to him being one of the main innovators of all things Podcast. The Daily Source Code is one of his many vehicles of choice. Some of the others are Podshow, an Audi A8 and possibly a bio-diesel car sometime in the future.

So what is the Daily Source Code. In short it a 30-40 minute show, featuring a daily mashup tune (an inspired mix of 2 or more songs combined into one); general podcast chat; an occasional Hit Test from Jan Polet; podsafe indie music and the occasional soundseeing tour. If you’re lucky, you might be witness to a Senseo burp, but these are becoming few and far between, which is fortunate as they now remind me of my dog being sick, but that’s a whole different story.

I think it’s wise to give a word of warning. Although always entertaining, this is not something you probably want to subscribe your Granny to. Although most shows can be considered as 15 rated, some of them are decidedly adult rated. I’m not talking Dawn and Drew (coming soon, oops no pun intended), but it’s not unusual for some of the more colourful English words to be used, not to mention the occasional dubious chat on porn, sex and other more mature subjects, so yes, you might not want to play it at work either. On the whole though, Adam does usually give a warning if the subject matter is going to go awry.

Conclusion : I listen to the show regularly and enjoy it a lot. I’ve found many great bands/artists and the chat is always lively. Sure he may say S***, P***, F***, C*** and A*** (have I missed any out?), but I can take it. Enter at your own peril :-)
